How Acute Coronary Syndromes And Lipid Therapy Shapes Heart Care
An acute coronary syndrome is what happens when a plaque in a coronary artery cracks and a clot forms on it, cutting the blood supply to part of the heart muscle. It covers unstable angina and both main kinds of heart attack. Treatment has two halves: opening the artery quickly, usually by catheter, and then lowering the risk of it happening again with antiplatelet drugs, cholesterol lowering treatment, blood pressure control and stopping smoking. The second half is less dramatic than the first and does more to determine how long someone lives afterwards.
